PADI Surface Marker Buoy Diver
The PADI Surface Marker Buoy Diver Speciality is a great addition for every diver to have under their belt. As your diving progresses, you will visit new and exciting dive sites and locations. Many of these dive sites require buddy teams (or even each diver) to be proficient with the use of DSMBs and reels or spools. It is likely you will be required to send one up at the end of most dives. This is especially true when in the sea.
Delayed Surface Marker Buoys (DSMBs) are long inflatable tubes. Divers launch them from underwater (or at the surface) to mark their position on the surface. These are an important surface signalling device for all divers. They are used to communicate with surface personnel on either a shore or a boat. Depending on the colour and type, they can signal to the surface that all is well or that you have a problem underwater. Every dive guide and instructor around the world will all carry at least one or two of these on every dive.
The most common use for the DSMB is that you deploy the buoy from around 5m to 10m underwater. The buoy lets the boat (which can be a day boat, zodiac or doni) know where the divers are. This allows boat traffic to keep a safe distance from ascending divers.
Surface marker buoys (SMBs) can also be used to tow along while making drift dives, marking boundaries for mapping or search and recovery. They also provide a line as a visual reference for ascending divers.
What will I do?
During the course, divers will complete a 5m confined water/limited open water dive and two open water training dives. During these sessions, you will learn the proper techniques and protocols for surface marker buoys and delayed surface marker buoys (DSMBs). Surface marker buoys (SMBs) are one of the most useful items of diving kit you'll ever own. Having the ability to use an SMB is vitally important when you are coastal diving.
During the course, we will train you on comfortable deployment and use of both reels and spools, oral and LPI inflation as well as open-ended DSMB use.
What are the prerequisites for this course?
If you're a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 10 years old, you can enrol in the PADI Surface Marker Buoy Diver course.
You will also be required to complete:
Please ensure you are fit to dive by checking these forms.
