PADI Open Water Diver Referral Course

Have you always wanted to learn to dive and discover new adventures beneath the waves? If so, the PADI Open Water Diver Referral course is the first step towards becoming a PADI Diver. The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world's most popular scuba course and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle.

With PADI being a global organisation, you have the option of splitting your PADI Open Water Diver Course into segments. This allows you to complete all the classroom and pool-based learning in Leeds and then complete your open water dives at a later date, either with us or abroad on your next holiday at any PADI dive centre. This means you can experience your first open water diving experience in warmer waters and you'll be fully prepared before you go. You will not waste your precious holiday time stuck in a classroom and pool when you really want to be in the sea!

If you've tried diving through a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience, the skills you learned may credit towards a portion of the full PADI Open Water Diver course certification. If you have completed this with us here at Scuba Leeds within the last 4 weeks, we will take your £30 Discover Scuba Diving fee off your PADI Open Water Diver course fee.

What will I do in the PADI Open Water Referral?

The PADI Open Water Diver Referral course consists of two main sections:
  • Self-study knowledge development
  • Confined Water Dives: 5 dives in a pool to learn basic scuba skills.

1. Knowledge Development

The Knowledge Development section consists of self-study E-learning, completed conveniently in your own time. This part of your course is designed to teach you the basic principles of scuba diving, and you will cover basic dive theory, equipment, skills and dive planning. You will also practice assembling and disassembling your dive gear.

2. Confined Water Dives

You will do a total of 5 confined water dives in a pool, where you will learn basic scuba skills, get comfortable underwater and have lots of fun!

Confined water session 1 and 3 - Tong High School Pool: Saturday 12:00 - 14:00

You will complete your first and third shallow water dive at Tong High School swimming pool - please note that transport is not provided. Once you arrive, you will have a pre-dive briefing with your instructor and complete a 90-minute shallow pool dive to a maximum depth of 1.8m.

The Saturday sessions are an ideal starting point for all new divers, as the pool has a sloping bottom. This means your instructor will let you breathe underwater for the first time and practice a couple of safety skills in water deep enough to stand up in. Once you are comfortable, your instructor will take you for a swim to the deep end of the pool.

Once you have completed your first shallow pool dive, we will take you to our 5.5m diver training pool.

Confined water session 2, 4 and 5 - John Charles Centre for Sports Pool: Thursdays 19:30 - 22:00

This pool is 5.5m deep, which means you will really get the full experience of how it feels to be weightless underwater. The sessions are around 2.5 hours long - this includes a briefing, equipment set up and a 90-minute dive, which means you will have plenty of time to practice skills and have fun!

Once in the pool, your instructor will help you to practice equalising while making a descent to 5.5m down our descent line. The line allows you to descend slowly whilst having something to hold on to. Once at the bottom of the dive pool, you will get to practice the skills necessary for the relevant session. You will have 3 confined water sessions in this pool altogether, with each session evolving your skill set to match that of an Open Water Scuba Diver.

3. Referral/ Open Water Sessions

Once you have completed the PADI Confined Water skills, you will be handed a PADI referral form, which is recognised by any of the 6,500 PADI dive centres operating in over 150 countries and territories around the world! The PADI Open Water Referral course allows you to leave the final qualifying Open Water dives to be completed at a later date, either with us as a full PADI Open Water Diver Course, or abroad on your next holiday! If you don't have a trip booked, we can even put you in touch with our sister Dive Centre in Malta if you are looking for somewhere to finish your course in warmer waters.
