PADI Tec 40

The PADI Tec 40 Diver course is where you transition from recreational scuba diving to technical diving. It’s a great place to start because it’s the first subdivision of the full PADI Tec Diver course and bridges the gap between no stop diving and full technical deep decompression diving. You gain experience and begin building the knowledge and skills you need to continue your tec diver training. You will qualify to make limited decompression dives to 40 metres.

You can consider enrolling in the PADI Tec 40 course if you're interested in technical diving but haven't yet met the prerequisites for the PADI Tec 45 or PADI Tec 50 diver course. Because you can do one of these dives in confined water such as a swimming pool, many divers start the Tec 40 courses in the winter months, ready to continue in open water when spring arrives.

What will I do?

The Tec 40 course consists of three knowledge development sections, three practical application sessions, and four training dives. You'll learn about:

  • Technical diving risks and responsibilities
  • Technical diving equipment, proper rigging and set up
  • Gas planning, oxygen limits and decompression planning
  • Team diving techniques and emergency procedures, such as dealing with free flows, manifold leaks and out of gas situations

You will also learn to:

Use decompression software and dive computers to plan and make decompression dives with no more than 10 minutes of total decompression and not deeper than 40 metres.

Use a single cylinder of decompression gas with up to 50 percent oxygen (EANx50) to add conservatism to the required decompression.

Since it's part of the course, your PADI Tec 40 course training credits toward the PADI Tec 45 and Tec 50 courses.

NOTE: You PADI Tec Course includes 4 days of Technical Diver training, materials and gases up to 40%. However, as with all training courses, the certification has to be earned. Most students will complete the course within the 4 days, however additional training beyond this will be charged on a per-day basis.

What scuba gear will I use?

You will use recreational scuba equipment, with some minor additions to enhance your ability to deal with tec diving conditions.

You may dive with twinsets or sidemounts during your course. Your PADI Tec Instructor may have you dive with nitrox for additional conservatism.

What are the prerequisites for this course?

To enroll in the Tec 40 course, you must be:

You also need to have a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

Note that qualifying certifications from other diver training organisations may apply to ask your PADI Tec Deep Instructor.

How do I start?

You'll use the Tec Deep Diver Crew-Pak, which introduces you to:

  • Tec diving lingo
  • Emergency procedures
  • Decompression and stage cylinder handling
  • Gas planning

The pack includes a manual, dive planning checklist and dive planning slate. The optional Equipment Set-up and Key Skills video on DVD is a great tool to help you practice at home in between your tec diving adventures. You'll continue to use the Tec Deep Diver Crew-Pak through Tec 50.
