Ireland’s Abundance of Wrecks
If you share the passion of our very own Iron Mike (a.k.a Mike Chatwood) and big lumps of sunken metal is what keeps you diving...... then this one is for you! An interactive map, including details of thousands of shipwrecks around the Irish coast has been released recently and it is mind blowing!
The Wreck Viewer
The interactive map, known as ‘The Wreck Viewer’ gives easy access to the Wreck Inventory of Ireland Database compiled by the Department’s NMS (National Monuments Service). The exact locations of more than 4000 recorded wrecks can be accessed free of charge as well as 14,000 shipwrecks whose locations are yet to be confirmed!
Notes from the developer
“It is important to note that the Wreck Viewer displays only wrecks for which we have a recorded location and these are represented on the map canvas as red dots. The red dot equates with the known approximate centre point of the wreck and is not indicative of its geographic or spatial extent. Wrecks with known locations account for approximately 22% (update and check) of the total number of records contained in the WIID; there is data held within the WIID on a large number of wrecks for which we have no precise recorded location, co-ordinate or known extent.”
